Mushroom playing music in the woods

BionicandtheWires connects mushrooms to instruments. Sensors capture the tiny electrical signals in the mushrooms.

“This has got to be one of the funkiest mushrooms I’ve ever connected up. It was creating lots of signals, possibly due to the sun and wind and all the rain we’ve had recently.”

Biking Across Scotland – Thurso to Perth

I recently took a week off to ride from Thurso back to home in Edinburgh. I’d never properly ridden the north east “Flow Country” and also aimed to ride right though Glen Affric on the way which I’d also not been all the way along before. Mostly, despite some harsh weather, it went well apart from snapping my saddle rails early on.

You Can See Everything | Official Teaser HD | A24

This looks interesting: Thirty-four days before she’s sent to prison, notorious Silicon Valley Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes invites a skeptical film crew to document her every move. What begins as an intimate portrait of an enigmatic felon becomes a mind-bending three-year journey into the abyss.

Cycling

Riding 220 kilometers over a humid summer night.

I left after dinner on a Friday evening to ride the nearby, 220km, Capital Trail mountain bike loop. Wasn’t sure if I’d ride through the night but apart for stopping for a quick nap in a field, I rode all the way through and arrived back the next afternoon.

Italian Spiderman

A trailer for a film I’d watch. Made in 2007 by an Australian film collective called Alrugo Entertainment.

The Badger Divide

I spent a couple of days re-riding the Badger Divide bikepacking route from Inverness to Glasgow in Scotland. Amazing weather, amazing views.

IT/Tech

Why AI agents are either the best or the worst thing we’ve ever built.

Hannah Fry built an OpenClaw AI agent. the agent opened a shop selling novelty mugs, emailed a journalist without being asked, and then leaked our passwords to a total stranger. AI agents don’t just answer questions – they act. They can browse the web, send emails, and spend your money.

The agent demonstrated the “lethal trifecta”, if an LLM has access to your private data, the internet, and someone can give them an untrusted instruction, then they are not safe.

IT/Tech

Holos Discover -Search the fediverse

An interesting (and slightly controversial due to basically being opt-out by default instead of opt-in, but apparently this is fixed) project is back. Holos Discover is a A #Fediverse search engine that uses standard #ActivityPub federation. It now follows you like any account, respects indexable flags, #nobot, #noindex, locked accounts. Deletions, edits, blocks are processed instantly through ActivityPub.
You have full control. Block it, mention it with “unfollow”, or disable indexing in your settings.

It’s still early days so the index will take some time to build up.

General IT/Tech Technology

Does anyone want what big tech is selling?

LLM AI can do some cool things. But is anyone measuring the quality of the output vs the real costs (I mean real total costs, not just your investor and environment subsidised free tier or small subscription) and effort of the input? Is it real inteligence, or just like a plastic doll that says “I love you” when you pull it’s string? Just good enough for small kids to suspend their disbelief for entertainment, companionship, and help in learning social skills.
